PUTNAM
COUNTY SPELLING BEE,
Hello twelve, hello thirteen, hello “omphaloskepsis.”
In THE 25TH ANNUAL
PUTNAM
COUNTY SPELLING BEE, six young people on the
edge of puberty strive to become adults in this
funny, tender, sardonic musical by the composer
of Falsettos. These outsiders use competition to
define themselves, apart from their crazy
families, while their struggle to escape
childhood is overseen by grown-ups who never
completely succeeded in escaping it themselves.

In
Xanadu,
the nine muses from ancient Greece come to life
on a Venice Beach wall mural. While roller
skating on the beach, one of the daughters, Kira,
meets and falls for a frustrated record album
cover artist named Sonny. Enter Danny McGuire,
an aging song and dance man who Kira inspired
back when he owned a supper club in New York in
the 40s. Together, with the magical help of Kira,
Sonny and Danny team up to build and open a
roller disco nightclub called Xanadu.
Based on the 1980 cult
favorite film starring Olivia Newton-John, the
music will be from the film version and the
popular score was written by John Farrar and
Jeff Lynne. Lynne wrote and produced all of the
Electric Light Orchestra "E.L.O." music, which
includes his 5 songs from the film, including
the Billboard Top 20 hits: "Xanadu," "Party All
Over the World," and "I'm Alive". Farrar’s hits
include most of Olivia Newton-John’s top songs
including 5 from the film, most notably "Magic",
which was #1 on Billboard, and "Suddenly",
another Top 20 hit.
